The houses on the Agout
Lined up in a single row along the Agout, the former homes of the river craftsmen display their red, ochre and yellow façades perched on sturdy stone pillars. You admire them from the Pont Vieux or from the river barges that slowly drift along the water from May to October. A date set on the Quai des Jacobins, at sunset, offers a backdrop more beautiful than any postcard.
Goya Museum and Spanish painting
In the city centre, the town hall, a former bishop’s palace designed by Hardouin-Mansart, houses the Goya Museum, dedicated to Spanish painting. You admire several paintings and engravings by the master, works by Vélasquez, Murillo or Picasso. Right behind, the Bishop’s garden, laid out by Le Nôtre, invites a silent walk among trimmed box hedges and flowery beds. A refined date steps away from the river.
Place Jean-Jaurès and old town
Place Jean-Jaurès, a wide esplanade framed by cafés and shops, is the living room of Castres. You share a drink facing the statue of the great orator born in Castres in 1859. The neighbouring streets, Villegoudou and Rodière, hide Renaissance mansions such as the Hôtel de Nayrac. On Lyad, people from Castres share their addresses and favourite paths; it is up to you to find someone to extend the walk with.
